Oh What a Silly Game We Play

Author: Karen Riddell

The art of Witnessing is being aware of everything taking place in each moment, with no judgment, questioning, criticism, or suppression. It is an awareness of all of existence, moment to moment.

Sitting breathing watching... watching watching.

Years of effort lead to one inescapable recognition. We need not do anything, because all effort is of the ego. Seems ludicrous but the truth dawns with such clarity making me wonder, just for an instant, what have we been doing all these years?

If we fully understand the nature of watchfulness, we realize, nothing else is as important as, becoming "the witness".

All internal questions disappear because the answers are no longer relevant. Desires fade because they belong to the ego, and what we were yesterday, is not what we have to be today. We are constantly evolving therefore, should remain open for the Universal Flow of events to reveal itself to us, and we should remain aware and not miss eternity in each moment.

The world with many pitfalls and empty thrills will no longer have a vice-like grip around our hearts and no longer will fuel our mental insecurities. Witnessing brings into being, an emotional non-attachment to the events taking place in our lives. It gives life to a tangible connection to an innate sense of Oneness with all things. It creates a sense of purpose and a feeling of being integral to the whole.

When we mentally and emotionally focus on our fears, it solidifies them making them real. Practicing being the witness, over time creates a feeling of separation between our sense of self and the experiences. Eventually, the events become like scenes upon the screen of our mind's eye, as if we were watching a movie. Finally, we realize that every circumstance, every consequence we live is a direct result of the choices we have made in our lives.

How did the drama wedge so deeply in our subconscious? How could an understanding so simple and clear take so long to manifest itself to us? The answer is evident even before the question is asked. When we can appreciate beauty in its utmost simplicity, each moment then becomes what it truly is, an exquisite expression of existence in its totality, waiting for us to discover in each and every moment

The process is the undoing. The undoing is the process and however long it takes is never too long. It is what it is and so shall it be. There is no other way. We give thanks

I heard Buddha laughed hysterically when enlightenment dawned upon him. Now I finally understand why. We have spent so many lifetimes engaging in an elaborate human drama, pulling out our hair because of internal turmoil and angst, ready to cut the very flesh from our bodies in desperation, and all the time we need only to have learnt the art of being aware.

The greatest mystery bares itself before us in its simplicity, yet we fail to see it, but then, nothing before its time. So we shall continue to play our silly game, as time is but also an illusion and the realization of our error will dawn upon us in the perfect season. We shall all witness ourselves playing our silly game and we shall laugh at our silliness and it will loosen its grip upon us, because we will awaken to the realization that we are the creators of the game and can change the rules at any time.

Therein lies our power.
