Teens, Take Control of Your Lives and Your Diabetes

Author: Mike Herman

Teens with diabetes need to know the signs that they are spiraling out of control. Recognizing the signs and not being afraid to ask for help is the first step towards a longer and healthier life.

Diabetes is serious, yes, but a positive attitude can help in controlling blood sugar levels, and dealing with the problems and with proper control a diabetic can look forward to a long, happy, productive life.

Teens are struggling independence, making smart decisions in their lives, and learning self-control. One of the smartest decisions that can made is to control their diabetes, and to ask for help when needed.

They have big enough problems as it is with their raging hormones, emotional feelings, self-esteem and the struggles of growing up and when they are dealing with diabetes the struggles are even greater. Their school work is getting tougher and tougher, the sport teams and events they are involved in , their mood swings, learning to drive and on and on.

Controlling their diabetes is another event in their already busy lives.

Teens, no matter how much they know, or how smart they are, they will sometimes slip. They may lie to themselves about it, or just plain ignore warning signs, or deny that there is a problem, but the right thing to do is to admit it and ask for help.

Don't allow feelings of fear and feeling overwhelmed control their life. There is help plenty of help, speak with their doctor, talk to their parents, or speak with a counselor at school. Don't be afraid to ask, they are there to help.

As we people of all ages, teens attitudes toward the disease, their stress levels and emotions, can play a big part in controlling it or exacerbating things.

The first step? Relax, stay cool and don't get overly stressed. When you let your emotions run out of control, it makes it even harder to control blood sugar levels. Adults have the same problem, but the struggles of being a teen may make it worse.

Teens bodies are changing every day and taking care of their health and controlling their diabetes is another item that may need to be learned. Eating a good healthy diet and getting exercise is a good place to start.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are important and eating lean protein, lean cut with a little fat. It is hard to eat healthy when you have a busy life of a teenager, but it is possible.

Exercise when possible. They can still take part in organized sports as long as they are keeping an eye on their blood sugar levels. While exercise will help keep teens relaxed, lowering their stress and, especially for boys, get the energy out of their systems, too much stress on the body is not good.

Along with diet and exercise that can help, new technology being developed is helping teenagers and adults control their diabetes. Glucose monitors and insulin pumps are just two of the newest developments diabetics are using to control their blood sugar levels, and improvements are being made all the time.

While teens may well "feel" overwhelmed with a diabetes diagnosis, everyone who has diabetes has been at this point, and most go on to live long, healthy lives after the diagnosis. With all the information you will get from doctors and dieticians, the research being done by scientists and doctors and the many new methods of controlling, treating diabetes there is a very bright future on the horizon.
