Small Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Author: Steve Gee

Do you have a small bathroom to remodel?

You might think that your bathroom is too tiny to remodel but it's surprising what can be done with a little creative effort. Don't give up on your ceramic dream bathroom yet.

First thing to do is to get to know your bathroom

Before you write off the idea completely why not sit down with a few sheets of square graph paper and try out a few different ideas. Measure your bathroom accurately then draw it to scale on square paper so that you can see exactly where everything is.

By now you should have become very familiar with your current bathroom. You will know where all the strange shapes and awkward objects are because you've had to make a lot of accurate measurements of the room. Now you can think about your new bathroom layout.

You now need to draw just the outline of your bathroom ready to fit your new fixtures into it. Use a new sheet of graph paper square and be as accurate as you were with the fist drawing. On a different sheet of squared paper draw accurate scale outlines of the fixtures you would like to put in it.

Now sit down with a pair of scissors and cut out the shapes of toilet, bathtub etc. that you drew on the last piece of graph paper. Get your bathroom outline drawing and begin trying different ways of arranging the cut out shapes inside your outline drawing. This is fun so don't be afraid to spend a few hours or as long as it takes to get it right.

A small bathroom remodeling example

When I dropped a jar into my bath and cracked it I decided that it would be a good time to redesign the room and add a shower cubicle at the same time. My bathroom is tiny so I wasn't sure that I would be able to realise this dream. I was dreading the job but it all worked out in the end. I got my new shower and the bathroom looks great.

Read about how I solved my small bathroom remodeling problem by clicking the link at the end of this article.

Here are some ideas that you might find helpful

The ideas listed below are intended to start you thinking of different and creative solutions to the problem of remodeling your small bathroom.

Raising the radiator can free space below

Putting the radiator high on a wall could be an easy way to free some space at ground level.

Place the bathtub in the middle of the room

Don't limit your thinking to having the bath along a wall. Placing it in the centre of the room could solve some problems if wall space is a premium.

Keep playing with your cut-outs

I'm always amazed to find that I can spend hours trying out different arrangements and yet when I leave it alone for a while and come back to it later I can often spot options that I hadn't seen before. So keep playing with your paper cut-outs.

Use a shaped shower cubicle

If you are of small to average build then you probably don't need the space that a square or rectangular shower cubicle provides. Installing a cubicle with a rounded quadrant can save a surprising amount of space in the bathroom and make it look nicer too.

Install a sliding door

Save room space by eliminating the need for the door to open into the bathroom. A door that slides sideways into or flush with the wall can be a solution.

Do it with mirrors

Using mirrors won't actually increase the size of the room that you have to install features in but they can be very effective at giving the illusion of space to the users of the room

Install storage cupboards

Providing plenty of storage cupboards placed high on the wall might free some floor space of all the clutter that accumulates.

I hope that you can see that even a small bathroom can be transformed into a dream if it's designed and planned well. Remember to take a look at how I remodeled my tiny little bathroom and added a shower cubicle while I was at it.
