In recent articles that I have written I spent a large amount of time discussing how to search for the perfect office chair. However, in this article I will be looking at how to decide on how your office workspace should be laid out so that this will help to promote a more ergonomic and comfortable position for you to work in. Remember a large part of your day in the office is spent sat at your desk. When selecting the furniture that you are to use in your office you need to consider what type of furniture you require and will it be able to withstand the rigours of the daily demands of your work routine. Also you need to ensure that the furniture is as comfortable and ergonomically designed as possible. By following the points listed below this should help to ensure that the office furniture you choose will meet all criterias of your day to day routine. Firstly, lets look at the desk. The first question you need to ask yourself is how much time will I be spending at it and how will I be using it. In most offices now days the desk is used to hold either a personal computer or a laptop on it. Ensure that your desk has enough space for your computer to be in a comfortable position and that there is enough space for you to carry out any other tasks that may be required of you. If possible make sure that all wiring can be tidied away neatly, many desks come with holes etc for wiring etc., to be put through and away from the work environment. Also when choosing your desk you must remember that it must provide you with ample space for you legs to be able to move freely and you will find that the standard height of most desks from the surface to the floor is usually from 29 to 30 inches. You now need to look at what style of desk; this will also depend on your work routine during the day. For example if you only have a small workspace to work within and would like everything you require during the day close to hand then you may decide on an L shape desk. However, if you require more space and find yourself with work strewn all over the place then a U shaped desk may be the ideal solution. The one disadvantage with this type of desk is that it can be slightly more expensive than an L shape one. Another type of desk you could look at if space is limited is the normal compact one where the screen is sat on the top shelf and the keyboard is on a retractable unit with the base unit being placed underneath. So the best way of deciding which type of furniture is right for you there are a number of factors you need to consider. 1. Budget 2. The type of work that you will be carrying out on a daily basis. 3. Ensuring that the space is comfortable and ergonomic to your needs. I hope this has provided you with some ideas on what to choose when looking at either building or refurbishing an office space in the future. |
