Acupuncture Colleges

Author: Michael Bustamante
Those of you, who are seeking an innovative and challenging curriculum, may be interested in enrolling in an acupuncture college. Known for its unique and ancient wisdoms, the discipline of acupuncture and oriental medicine involves in-depth coursework that emphasizes the complete understanding of mind, body and spirit, which is central to the field.

In a typical acupuncture college, students will gain a comprehensive course of study geared toward acupuncture; Chinese medicine; Herbology; Tui Na; Qigong; Chinese language; medical terminology; and practical business management. In most cases, acupuncture college degree programs generally take between three to four years to complete; depending on full or part-time enrollment.

Detailed studies provided at an acupuncture college include a broad assortment of instruction including but not limited to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture and philosophy; Chinese medicine concepts in diagnosis; pathology and physiology; principles and skills of acupuncture treatment; Tui Na (Chinese medical massage); herbal medicine and nutrition; and clinical internship.

Depending on individual acupuncture college, there may be varying levels of academic programs; but in many cases, Oriental medicine schools often provide at least two. Commonly, an acupuncture college will extend degree programs in Master of Acupuncture and Master of Oriental Medicine. While both of these degrees can be earned separately, there are an abundance of acupuncture colleges that may afford students with opportunities to combine the two as a comprehensive course for an extended level of education.

Additionally, some acupuncture colleges provide online courses, as well as continuing education courses to alumni and other practitioners. This line of academics is essential to the practicing acupuncturist who is maintaining or improving his skills in the field.

Essentially, acupuncture colleges not only teach students, but mentor them to become successful acupuncturists. (State licensing requirements vary. Please review your state guidelines and acupuncture college curriculums for more information.) Upon course fulfillment, graduates may take an exam* administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to become nationally certified.

Students who have achieved their educational goals, certification and/or licensure, can expect to work in a lucrative and rewarding medical field; where they will use acupuncture (needling) as a treatment for patients; as well as herbal prescriptions and remedies; acupressure; nutritional guidance and other Traditional Chinese Medicine applications.
